Far be it from your editors to call anyone into the Trifecta offices for a dressing down. But this week, we couldn't help but notice that a lot of the entries used 'trail' incorrectly. We had a sprinkling of nouns, a smattering of '-eds' and a handful of '-ings'. But, alas, it was 'trail' the verb we were looking for and only those entries that used the word correctly were considered for our top three. It was a shame, as some of the offending pieces were world-class.
In first place, and continuing an impressive run of form for poetry, is Jill K and her Mid-March Storm. Her writing was beautiful her imagery powerful.
In second place is Rachel with her touching story, Contrails. Again, it's beautifully written and packed full of emotion. In third place is a newcomer, JannaTwrites. We loved her piece, In the Morning. Have a look at it and take the time to welcome her to the challenge.
This weekend's challenge is to write a story entitled 'Lost' in exactly 33 words. The word 'lost' can only appear in the title, not your 33 words. Any reference to the TV show could result in another visit to see the editors in the Trifecta offices.

Mid-March Storm
Wheeze and peal
trail up from the quarry.
I thought that graffiti'd shack
had been abandoned.
On the culvert's far side, a man,
made tiny by distance,
plays the accordion.
On my side, the tips
of the hedge are clotted
with snow like full-blown dandelion.
I blow and wish.

Congrats Jill! Thanks you so much for choosing me for 2nd place. I am honored. There was a lot of great entries this week!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all the winners! All three pieces were so beautifully crafted. And it's nice to "meet" you, Jill, Rachel, and Janna!
ReplyDeleteCongratualtions Jill, Rachel and Janna! Beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all. :-)
ReplyDeleteEverytime I try to submit my link it says that my submission does not contain a backlink to the site, yet it does! Can anyone help me with this?
ReplyDeleteit does, indeed, have the link. I can try for you, if you like.
DeleteOk, give it a shot if you would not mind! Thanks!

WOW thanks...that was fast! Do I have something in my settings that was messing that up!?
DeleteHi NatureGirl
DeleteI tried it from here and had the same response. I don't understand why it was asking for a link that was clearly there. I was able to add it manually by going into the inlinkz system. I hope the title and link is okay. Let me know if you want me to change anything.
If anyone else has similar problems, please let us know.
Thanks
David
David beat me to it, NatureGirl. Glad it works now :)
DeleteCongratulations, Jill - loved the poem! I can also see why Rachel's piece placed. There were many great entries this week, so I am shocked (and thrilled) that my entry placed. Thanks for welcoming me into your group :)
ReplyDeleteYour piece was well deserving of this placement, Janna. Congratulations and looking forward to more!
DeleteCongrats to you all. Well deserved!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all, there were so many terrific entries! I feel inspired all over the place!
ReplyDeleteHey, so two weekends ago, I wrote a little 33 word story with the title Lost. I considered re-entering it, but I decided that would be too naughty. ;-)
Hi David: I am having trouble submitting my entry (again).
ReplyDeleteI have tried everything. Thanks for your help. Natalie
You're up now. The key is to get the url of your post, not just your blog's home. If that makes sense. Thanks for linking up!
Delete-Lisa
Thank you. The problem is it only shows the blog's name even though I create the whole line myself using the title, etc. like you showed me last week. I think the problem is that I have two names, the blog name and the blogspot link. I'm not sure how to change it completely.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. If, while at your blog, you click on the title of your blog post, only that post will show up. Once you have only that post on the page, copy that link. That should work.
DeleteThe good news is that you are a regular writer, so we'll have plenty of opportunities to sort it out over the coming weeks. :-)
Thanks, I feel like such an idiot;
Delete(tempted to use the exclamation mark here, but I won't)
Holy cow, you people are fast! I know it's only 33 words, but... jeez... :)
ReplyDeleteRight? I woke up this morning to 32 submissions! Yikes! Nicely done, Trifectans.
DeleteJust like a few others I am having trouble submitting my link. I am new here and don't know of I'm doing something wrong. If anyone could help I would much appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris
DeleteWhat message do you get when you try and link up?
David
It says it does not contain a backlink to the site.
DeleteHey Chris,
DeleteYou need to take "blogspot" out of our url. It should just be www.trifectawritingchallenge.com. That should do the trick. Let us know if it doesn't.
Lisa
That did it! Thank you very much for your help.
DeleteThis is my first entry -- sounds like an interesting concept! Happy Weekend!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the challenge! Thanks for linking up.
DeleteWOW!!!! Thank you so much! I just found this out this morning. Thank you thank you thank you :) It made my day.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!
DeleteI just submitted a second entry (I'm happily hooked and love your site :), and although it did list me as #45, right under my #44 entry that I believe you had to help with as the link system was having trouble, it's now gone. I'm sorry to be such a bother but if you could help me figure out how to submit this entry I promise I will leave you be for the rest of the weekend. Thank you, very much! http://mairzeebp.wordpress.com/2012/03/17/trifextra-lost-second-entry
ReplyDeleteLooks like you're up now. Is that right, or am I missing something?
DeleteYou are correct, thank you!!
DeleteI'm only 3 comments in and I've had to navigate 2 captchas. I would encourage all of the submitters to turn off this feature. There are other (better) ways to handle spam.
ReplyDeleteI AGREE!! Unless you are getting spammed to high heaven, word captcha is cumbersome and unnecessary.
DeleteIt is easily turned off in your blogger's post options. :)
***Also, everyone, DO WE HAVE TO USE the THIRD definition of the word for the weekend challenge?***
I thought we did, but now I'm confused. It makes a big difference!
Best,
StephanieC
Captcha has gotten lots of discussion here recently. We don't want to tell people how to run their own blogs, but it does seem that those who turn Captcha off will receive more comments. Definitely something to consider (and of course the editors would appreciate one less hoop to jump through).
DeleteAs for the prompt, no. You do not need to use the third definition of the word. That rule only applies during the week. Thanks for the comment.
Weekends we don't have to use third definitions.
DeleteAnd I hate hate HATE Captcha. Editors, can you mention it in the challenge?
I'm feeling terrible guilt and so commenting and fighting my way through the captcha, but it's irritating.
Are we supposed to be voting for weekend 8s lost entries? If so, is there a link somewhere?
ReplyDeleteHi tiktok, nope. Every third weekend challenge is community-judged. (#3, 6, 9, etc) For the winners, check out the current post on our home page.
DeleteBlast! Missed the deadline. I had such fun compiling this 33-worder, too:
ReplyDeleteJUST FOR THE (CLEAN) RECORD
Clean round the bend can mean
Insanity is seen;
In toilet-cleaner mode
Completely diff’rent road!
But people free of drugs,
Though filthy; full of bugs;
With mind disgusting mess -
Clean record, nonetheless.
You haven't missed it. You're just on the wrong post. Click the first post on our home page and insert your link there. You have 45 minutes. GO!!
