I didn't intend on keeping count, but I nevertheless found myself with a slash mark for each one I read. Four. Four out of forty-four posts this weekend made direct reference to zombies. Two of you used the word "mote." Many of you referenced Higgs boson. We've mentioned loving you guys, right?
First place this weekend goes to Whimsygizmo for her amazing piece End Game. We loved the marble. We tripped, deliciously, over "breathe your best last." It's a beautiful piece, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Coming in third this week is Writing In The Margins, Bursting At The Seams with Three Days. There are moments of absolute brilliance in this piece, starting with "bobble head news."
Thanks to all the Trifectans who participated this weekend, and congratulations to the winners.
This week we are switching things up a bit. Over the past several months, we've gotten a handful of requests for a more generous word limit. Fellow Trifectan, El Guapo, even commented, in a Twitter conversation, ". . . we're writers. You could give no limit and it still wouldn't be enough space." Duly noted.
Your prompt this week is just to write. You have three weeks to write to your heart's content. We want no fewer than 333 and no more than 3,333 words. Any topic, any style. Give us what you've got.
The prompt will open today and will close on Thursday, July 26 at 8 pm Eastern. Given the length of the responses, we are asking for an additional week for judging. Winners will be announced in the August 3rd post.
We will still be posting new Trifextra prompts each weekend, so be sure you check in for those. Good luck and have fun!

Second place this weekend goes to C.D. Tolliver for Eschatology or Est Scatologie. In a world that can sometimes seem fixated on trivial matters, C.D. Tolliver's smart piece was a breath of fresh air. I think I’m gonna

Yay! More words! More words! Thanks - And thanks for third!
ReplyDeletewow, what a fantastic way to enjoy a few weeks of summer...:)
ReplyDeleteHey, very very cool! I'm totally excited. I love it when you give us lots of words!!
ReplyDeleteHa! When I tweeted that idea, it was almost tongue-in-cheek. :) Dang, now I'd better come up with something...
ReplyDeleteCongrats to DeJackson - this piece absolutely BLEW ME AWAY. Three very different, very deserving winners this week.
Oh, noes!
ReplyDeleteI love a compact, focused prompt to get my juices flowing. More words isn't always better :(
Congrats to the winners this week! I was traveling, so I didn't comment on as many as I'd like to have. In the same vein, thanks to all who came and commented on mine.
I agree. I like the short ones. Do you think that people actually read eachothers longer ones? I am not trying to start a big argument here, but part of the reason that I like the quick ones is because I would rather people actually read the thing instead of hitting like or skimming it.
DeleteI also prefer the short ones because it seems more challenging. Anyone can write long stuff right? Okay, maybe not anyone, but writers...I don't know what to do about this challenge.
Right there with ya. I actually had a convo with my son about this, how it is more of a challenge to your vocabulary and creativity to write a complete story in a shorter piece. Regardless, I find it very hard to swallow that anyone has any desire to sit at their computer and suffer through that many words on someone's blog. Sure, I write that much. All the time, every day. Novel, novelettes, short stories, epic poetry, all of it. But there is no way I'd publish anything that long on my blog and expect anyone to actually read it. I save the longer stuff for an agent. Tuck it away as part of a bigger project. Toss it in my "leftovers" folder. All longer pieces really are are slivers of brilliance connected by the passage of time. Blowing minds always happens in the first few sentences anyway ;-)
DeleteSorry for those who aren't in love with the prompt. But, as mentioned below, if you stick to 333 words, you're still within the guidelines. For those who requested it, I hope you have fun with it!
DeleteDon't pay attention to me. I just like to complain about crap. Ask anyone. That's what I'm best at. It's not like I'm not gonna play anyway ;-) I'm looking into a job at professional complaining. Just trying to hone my skillz.
DeleteTrifecta needs us whiners to keep them in line. Plus, this whole prompt was in response to other whining. Don't feel bad Deus.
DeleteTrifecta, you all know I love your controlling demands; even if I don't like them much. I actually am hoping to manipulate my readers with this one, so it should be good for me, or them, or something...it will work.
Ha ha! Well, there are two ways of looking at it: either we respond to whining (we prefer the term 'brainstorming') or else it just so happens that one of us is single-parenting two small children on the other side of the globe from her home while the other is packing her life up and preparing to move a few states away from her home. All of which neatly coincide with the Trifectans' request for more generous word limit. Summer is a great time to break out of the norm, I say.
DeleteIf you find a job professionally complaining, Deus, please pass along the details. I think I'd be pretty perfect at that job, too.
Sounds like you have the manipulation market cornered with your use of whining, sob stories, and timing of certain challenges.
DeleteI wrote a light, airy piece instead of my original thoughts for this challenge. I'll call it light Poe.
Honestly though, all kidding aside, it sounds like both of you are pretty busy. I hope the single parenting doesn't end up sending you to a mental institution or to jail, and I wish her the best with her move.
Shockingly, I've managed to come up with something to link up anyway...
DeleteI don't even know how many words mine took, but I combined it with the prompt words from the Sunday Whirl and came up with irony that is bound to get me bit in my little Irish ass!! I do love the strict 33s, probably owing to all the vinyl records in my collection of music... peace, and many thanks for this challenge! Amy
DeleteOK, just this once....THEN back to 333 one word deals, okay? I don't like change. I like 3 stuff. Since ya'll (we say ya'll in Atlanta) inspired the political story this weekend, you'll get a lot of words of that one.
ReplyDeleteHappy 3 weeks.
I love working to 333 words, because it forces precision, something I need to work on. But I also love my characters and it's tough to flesh out a character in 333 words.
ReplyDeleteThing is, we don't have to write long pieces here. We can shoot for the 333 and still fall within the guidelines.
I'm looking forward to tackling this challenge. But I'll miss Monday morning 10AM prompt checks.
Sure, throw my comment back at me. Now I have to think up something.
ReplyDeleteSigh.
On the other hand, great way to score yourselves a brief summer hiatus, and still keep us entertained!
I love this prompt, just to chime in. Every single week, I write something that is 500 or more words when I'm aiming for 333, and it hurts my feelings to chop them. I'm excited for the chance to be wordy, just this once.
ReplyDeleteHa! It hurts your feelings. Love it. I can't wait to see what you all do with more space.
DeleteAmanda, I don't really think they meant to say they love that it hurts your feelings. I share your dismay... every little word that feels the sting of my backspace button, it's like a tiny bit of blood is shed.
DeleteWhat can I say? I only have one kid and she's living it up on the West Coast? What else can I get all squoogy about other than my poems?! (wink) Amy
Hello. Just posted mine, and I look forward to reading the others here after dinner. Bye for now.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say THANK YOU, so much, for the honor, and your kind comments. :)

i do believe this grants me the opportunity, and excuse, to continue the piece i've been attempting to complete for quite some time. i've always been too lazy to write many words, haha.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to be here--I don't do the word prompts so much - not because they are not interesting but my life flows in and out of control and has been mainly out, but all worth trying and interesting. Thanks for the opportunity. k.
ReplyDeleteI just did my very first Trifecta writing prompt this weekend and I'm excited to get working on this longer piece :) Wish I would have found your blog a lot sooner. Oh well, fun now! Happy writing everyone :)

Well, we're glad you're here now. Welcome!
DeleteDear Trifecta - I posted twice by mistake, having forgotten I'd already linked a story. Please can you delete my second: No. 14?
ReplyDeleteDone!
