Trifextra: Week Thirty

We issued a difficult challenge last week: to write on the third definition of heart.  The definition was a tricky one to nail.  Lots of responses confused the third and fourth definitions of the word, and we found ourselves referring back to the dictionary more often than usual.

In first place this week is Scriptor Obscura.  An ole-timer around these parts, Scriptor hasn't been seen around the site in awhile.  We're glad she's back, and we're grateful she lends us her beautiful words.  Check out Amsterdam:

Frank liked a fresh herring in the evenings,
split raw,
served with chopped onions and pickles.

Wandering the streets through falling snow,
munching,
his melancholy heart soothed by piscine flesh;
Frank wondered what it would be like to fly,
soaring over mazed canals, arms wide,
arcing,
each snowflake spiraling, drifting,
glinting in the moonlight,
melting on moistened tongue.

Perhaps this was as close as he’d ever get
to tasting the stars.

Second place goes to Hoofprints In My Garden with Crowded.  This gorgeous tumble of memories and images makes for a really pleasing read.  Be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

Third place this week goes to R.L.W. at Snippets and Scraps for her piece, My Love Is Like An Infinite Loop.  It's the age-old story of a robot trying in vain to gain the affections of the man who created her.  In other words, we loved her R.L.W.'s ingenuity.  She thought up the prompt and wowed us with her own response.  Nice job.

On to this weekend's challenge, which will be judged by the community.  The trickiness of this past week's prompt has us thinking about the various ways we use words.  This weekend we want you to write a 33-word response using the name of an animal as a verb.  Some examples are: to dog, to snake, to bear, to duck. . .you get the idea.  Write about anything you want and use whichever verb tense you need, but give us an animal as a verb in there somewhere.  Let's see if we can discover new things by looking from a different perspective.

This weekend's challenge is community-judged.
  • For the 12 hours following the close of the challenge, voting will be enabled on links.
  • In order to vote, return to this post where stars will appear next to each link.  To vote, simply click the star that corresponds with your favorite post.
  • You can vote for your top three favorite posts.
  • Voting is open to everyone. Encourage your friends to vote for you, if you wish, but please don't tell them to vote on a number.  The numbering of the posts changes regularly, as authors have the ability to delete their own links at any time.
  • You have 12 hours to vote.  It's not much time, so be diligent! We'll send out reminders on Twitter and Facebook.
Good luck!

  1. Thank you for recognizing my poem! I had better not duck the next challenge. :)

    1. "Duck" was a popular choice in response to this prompt. I hadn't considered going with an animal-verb that was already in use. :)

  2. LOVED the winning piece, Amsterdam. I knew it would win, and I pretty much wanted to book my ticket to Amsterdam right then and there. Do you know how much a last-minute one-way flight to Amsterdam is? looks like I will be eating my herring canned.........

    best,

  5. I don't know why, but I never find the post where we vote for the winners. I am a follower, get the prompts by email, but not the voting thing. Mind you, I would have voted for Lumdog, too!

    1. We vote for the winners on the same post where we link up. It's this post, but the voting is only open for the 12 hours immediately following the close of the challenge. Twelve hours after the close of the challenge, the voting option disappears.

If you're getting the posts by email, then you'll need to just remind yourself to come back to that same post at the end of the challenge, as there's not a new post that would come to your inbox.

Does that make sense? Email us if you have more questions. And thanks for the comment!
