Trifecta: Week Forty-Eight

This weekend we threw a curveball at the Trifecta community and, as usual, you stood up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.  What we've learned about wishes is it's probably best not to make them.  Dreaming big and taking action seems the better choice.  But if you plan to keep on wishing, make sure you cover all your bases in the fine print.  You never know what fate might throw at you.

Misener Miscellany takes first place with a wry piece that speaks to the need for precise wording when wishing.
Marty suddenly realized he should have specified he was speaking metaphorically when he wished to “rocket straight to the top,” “burning brighter than a supernova,” having a golden parachute with “no strings attached.”
In second, Writing in the Margins, Bursting at the Seams showed us the dark way an all too common wish plays out all too often.  Rounding out the top three, Karen is Muttering shows us the true road to world peace.  Congrats to all our winners, be sure to check them out if you haven't already.

The winner of Marilynne Robinson's book, Home, is Draug.  Congrats!

Send us an email with your mailing address and we'll get it right out to you. We'd love to hear your thoughts after you've read it. Thanks to all those who gave feedback. We have a new post up under the critique tab. There's not a prize for leaving feedback this week except, of course, for the gratitude of your fellow Trifectan who was brave enough to put himself out there.

In keeping with the month of ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night, our discussion topic for the week is things that scared you as a child.  I was deathly afraid of leaving a limb hanging over the bed.  I was certain that it would be  hacked off immediately. Monsters under the bed, clowns, snow (Chionophobia.  It's a thing.)  Whatever beasties haunted your dreams, we want to hear about them.  Maybe it will help us purge the demons.  Or at least transfer them to someone else.

This week's word is:

SINISTER
1 archaic : unfavorable, unlucky
2 archaic : fraudulent
3: singularly evil or productive of evil

Please remember:
  • Your response must be between 33 and 333 words.
  • You must use the 3rd definition of the given word in your post.
  • The word itself needs to be included in your response.
  • You may not use a variation of the word; it needs to be exactly as stated above.
  • Only one entry per writer.

  1. Hooray for the winners! Everyone had some crazy wishes and outcomes!

It seems I'm only good at winning prizes when sheer dumb luck + Trifecta is involved. Trifecta, can I take you to the local casinos? :)

Awesome prompt. I was (and still am) afraid of cutting open a pumpkin to find a monster inside. And mirrors. Mirrors are terrifying. SINISTER. Will think on the prompt while my car is being serviced :D

    1. Oh jeez I remembered another irrational fear that is still with me. Does anyone else get freaked out when you see a cabinet/closet/pantry door hanging open? Room doors standing ajar don't bother me but open closets, kitchen cabinets, little crawl space doors...*shudder*

  2. Um ... I'm speechless ... I so very much enjoyed the stories that were produced this weekend and, well, thank you.

    1. Also I suck at getting noticed.

Congratulations to Misener Miscellany, I thought that story worked some spectacular magic in the unique way the wishes and results were presented; and to Writing in the Margins, Bursting at the Seams who's tale of abuse broke my heart.

Also, Woot to Draug, I hope the book is awesome! (I'm reading Margaret Trudeau's Autobiography right now ... meh ...

  4. Thank you all very much. There were some great responses this weekend. I don't always get a chance to respond personally to all the comments on my blog, but they are always read and appreciated.

Congrats also to Writing in thr Margins and Karen; both very deserving. Both struck a chord with me, for very different reasons.

  5. First, hooray for the winners! Well deserved indeed.

Also, another great word to continue my Death series!

Things that frightened me .. hmm. I think I was afraid of lobsters, crabs, anything with pinchers. Now, I'm afraid of planes. Not flying, just planes.

Second, boy am I glad to see that I am not the only one terrified of mirrors. I'm also very scared of frogs; they have these enormous dead fish eyes...

  8. Clowns because Poltergeist
The light because as long as the dark was on, there weren't any shadows. It was only when somebody turned on a light that creepy things showed up
My own nightmares. (Raise your hand if you had nightmares about axe murderers until you watch Poltergeist, at which time the nightmares became better for inexplicable reasons)

  9. I'm with you, Jessie. Not with the clowns but the shadows and axe murderers. I can't watch Poltergeist. It wouldn't be good for me!

  10. Pennywise and Poltergeist ruined clowns for me. Cockroaches, open closet doors, and the dark make for many anxious moments.

  12. Hey Trifectans, can I beg for a show of assistance? Several of us who participate regularly in the Trifecta meme need your help. We're in a contest called America's Next Author, and we have submitted short stories. We could use your votes and Tweets and facebook likes. Here's what we need - it seriously will take you only a few minutes.

Visit the four links below I'm linking them Alphabetically. For each one, on the right side of the screen vote by clicking the VOTE button. (If you like the story, leave it set to 'brilliant') Then, further down on the right, click "tweet" and send, and then click "Like" for facebook. (And if you have whatever that other social media thing is activated, then send it, too).

If you have more than a minute, write quick reviews of the pieces and assign a star rating at the bottom of the page.

  13. For me...cockroaches (thanks to creepshow), sailboats in the water/sharks (thanks to Jaws), being stabbed in my sleep (so I slept with all my lovies tucked in around me), Alice Cooper in Prince of Darkness, and burned down houses.

And woot! I'm in again! This was a great prompt!
